We are excited to host the monthly Seed-Dating workshop on 26th August.

*Seed-Dating* is a monthly workshop and reading group for plant-lovers to connect through seeds and plant-human relationships – we explore how seeds can serve as powerful metaphors for resistance, resilience, and future possibility. Through games, mapping, and creative prompts, we spark conversations, build action lists around food justice, and develop ideas to support more food-growing across the city.

At the heart of it is the “seed-date,” where strangers respond to anonymous questions in brown envelopes, sparking dialogue that grows into collective action. Sessions are grounded in a monthly reading on seed-saving politics and practices. Past themes have included cultural inheritance, genes as currency, the ethics of reviving ancient seeds, and building libraries for local weed seeds.

Join us at Edible Landscapes London on 25th August for a free, family-day. We’ll be exploring the garden and making forest arts & crafts.

Make a Hapa Zome leaf and flower print to take home. Create a bug hotel and join the insect theatre to discover more about the lives of some of our smaller garden friends. Plus forest arts and crafts including bark rubbing and wishing tree, and tours of our edible forest gardens (suitable for little ones!)

No need to book as the day will flow as a drop-in. We do however have a schedule of activities throughout the day. We recommend arriving early as we have limited spaces on some activities. The event runs from 11am to 3pm.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a sturdy bench from railway sleepers, for your garden? 
or get practicing with new tools, to create new things from old wood?
Come and join us and The Woodshop of Recycled Delights for an introduction to basic woodwork skills. 
We will be creating a beautiful rustic bench for the new seating area at the Forest Garden.
Participants will learn to use a variety of tools, gaining the skills to be able to recreate this bench at home, using tongue and groove joints. 
Sharing the secret to successfully take apart old pallets, reclaiming these into usable wood for building a variety of useful things, such as planters.
Please bring warm clothes and a suitable coat for all weathers. 
This workshop is suitable for participants age 16 and over. If you are under age 16 and interested in taking part in future workshops, please let us know.

Come and celebrate the tradition of Halloween and get creative in a Forest Garden
Come to our beautiful enclosed, community garden inside Finsbury Park, and get carving your Halloween pumpkin.
We will provide every ticket holder with a pumpkin to carve and take home. If you wish to keep on carving or work on a family sized pumpkin,

With Laura Barker and LiLi K Bright. Learn how to make a creative tool for inspiring yourself and others, and practice using it. You’ll collect plant materials from around the garden, create cards with them, learning more about the plants while adding your own unique perspectives.

You’ll leave with a set of yarrow cards unique to Edible Landscapes and you, which you can use again, the creations you make in the workshop, which could include writing, drawing, collaging.

Description

Come and try your hand at weaving, using a variety of materials, many locally sourced, including – bullrush & willow collected at Woodberry Wetlands as part of the conservation programme, rafia recycled from our Xmas 2021 decorations, wire upcycled from broken bark fencing, wool, grasses and more! We will make little baskets, mats and mini looms from recycled wood to form woven pictures and practice weaving techniques used all over the world for centuries.   Suitable for children over 5 yrs with assistance of a carer.

Description

Session 1. Kitchen and garden: dyeing and contact printing with domestic plants and products
Learn about plant-based dyeing using a variety of easily available plants and products including onion skins, tea, sumach, vinegar, rusty nails and bicarb. You’ll dye fabric and make leaf prints using techniques based on Cherokee leaf printing and Lithuanian egg dyeing.
You’ll come away from the workshop with dyed and printed squares of fabric, a worksheet, some knowledge of how to source common products to dye with and basic skills to develop further at home.

Session 2. The brightest and best: dyeing red and yellow with madder and weld
Using plants grown in ELL’s dye garden and other far-flung places, you’ll learn how to prepare and dye natural fabrics in rich reds and yellows and how to use simple folding and twisting techniques to create multi-coloured patterns.
You’ll come away from the workshop with a completed piece of fabric to make into a scarf or use as gift wrap, a worksheet, some knowledge of how to grow dye plants and basic skills to develop further at home.

Session 3. Blue inside: The simple secrets of getting blue from Woad and Japanese Indigo
We will look at which indigo bearing plants grow in the UK and how to grow them. We will explore ways of getting blue from woad and Japanese Indigo, including leaf printing with a craft press, woad squishing and basic indigo vat dyeing using simple shibori pattern making techniques.
At the end of the workshop, you’ll have fabric samples of different ways of extracting blue from woad and indigo, a worksheet of the methods and some knowledge of how to grow the plants.

Session 4. Inks, printing and painting with natural dyes
Using natural dyes on paper (and maybe a bit on fabric) we’ll look at making paints and inks from recycled dyes and foraged plants, adding pastes for block and screen printing, and altering colours with tannins, oxalic acid, vinegar and bicarb.
At the end of the workshop, you’ll have a worksheet of methods, basic knowledge of how to make inks and print paste and a sample of your own ink to take home.

About Anne Barwick:

Anne started work as an architect and has had an interest in printing for over 15 years, but found conventional oil-based inks unpleasant  to use. She discovered how architects and builders such as William Morris had used natural dyes in their decorative work and set out to learn more.
Anne started the Edible Landscapes dye garden in 2018 and has held printing and dyeing workshops in the ELL garden since 2019. In this time the garden has expanded and now has a showcase bed with a variety of dye plants and a productive bed dedicated to madder (red), indigo bearing plants (blue) with space for weld (yellow) in the future.
For the past 10 years Anne has been growing and using dye plants. Her approach has been influenced by two great teachers with very different practices, India Flint, the champion of Eco-printing and Michel Garcia, a world-renowned dyer, phytochemist and botanist.  India’s philosophical approach and her focus on the beauty of the process has had a profound effect on the way Anne lives and works, as has Michel’s intense scientific inquiry into the way dyes work with fabrics to make colour. Both have infused and enthused her with the long history and global nature of natural dyeing.
Anne has continued expanding her knowledge with online research and experimenting in own studio in North London. She is currently compiling a portfolio for the AGSWD Certificate in Natural Dyeing. She enjoys working with sustainable materials and looking at the environmental impact of her practice. Alongside growing dye plants using regenerative horticultural processes, Anne aims to recycle dyes and mordants after use and to source end of line and second-hand materials to dye. Mainly working with second hand cotton, but occasionally able to save silk and wool from landfill.

Come and try your hand at weaving, make baskets and matts using locally sourced willow, rafia, grasses and more. We’ll be using a variety of materials, including bullrush and willow collected at Woodberry Wetlands, as part of their conservation programme. We’ll be getting creative with rafia recycled from the park’s festive decorations, wire upcycled from broken bark fencing, wool, grasses and more! Join us to make artwork ranging from small baskets, to mats and mini looms from recycled wood. We’ll form woven pictures, and practice weaving techniques used all over the world. Suitable for children over 5yrs with the assistance of a carer.

Rebecca, who recently received a Young Innovators Award for her new sustainable business idea, is running two youth climate action workshops.
These sessions will look at how we can all turn climate concerns into climate solutions. It will help young people channel their creative energy into brainstorming new ideas for how we can tackle the climate crisis together. The group will be able to take in the surrounding nature at Edible Landscapes London and learn from it as we consider our big environmental challenges. The workshop will get the group thinking about how to turn these ideas into real world solutions, policies and businesses, drawing on Rebecca’s experience of starting her own business, Ecosy Travel, and being a forest gardener at ELL.

‘Natural Colours 1’

The brightest and best: dyeing red and yellow with madder and weld

Using plants grown in ELL’s dye garden and other far flung places, you’ll learn how to prepare and dye natural fabrics in rich reds and yellows and how to use simple folding and twisting techniques to create multicoloured patterns.
You’ll come away from the workshop with a completed piece of fabric to make into a scarf or use as gift wrap, a worksheet, some knowledge of how to grow dye plants and basic skills to develop further at home. Please bring lunch

‘Natural Colours 2’

Kitchen and garden: dyeing and contact printing with domestic plants and products

Using a variety of easily available plants and products including onion skins, tea, sumach, vinegar, rusty nails and bicarb, you’ll learn how to dye and make leaf prints on fabric.
You’ll come away from the workshop with dyed and printed squares of fabric, a worksheet, some knowledge of how to source common products to dye with and basic skills to develop further at home.

MATERIALS :

We grow our own dye plants and use these, or ethical sourced dyes from other suppliers, in workshops. We only use bio mordants and safe alum or iron based mordants.
We like to work with sustainable materials where possible and source end of line and second hand materials that would otherwise go to waste.
You will be dyeing mainly with second hand cotton, plus wool and other plant based materials, when these are available.

We have 3 tree and hedge planting days in Finsbury Park. This is taking place in partnership with The Friends of Finsbury Park, and our wonderful Haringey parks team led by Tony and Ricard. Alongside planting native trees for wildlife, we will plant a hedge of mixed natives such as Hawthorn, Blackthorn, and Dog Rose. Get those wellies and gloves on! Join us in learning how to plant trees with the team, and help other species to flourish in the park.

Description

In these sessions we’ll be making lots of different festive tree decorations using all natural materials. You’ll learn how to make dried orange slice decorations, adorned with festive finds from the forest garden and turn collected twigs and sticks from the park into a gorgeous star for your tree. You’ll also be able to use your creativity to make natural decorations of your choosing from the materials provided and those available to forage in the garden.
We’re hoping to make lots of beautiful decorations for you to take home and for us to hang around the trees in between the play area and lake in the park to make Finsbury Park look festive for all to enjoy.

Description

Endless knot decorations like those we’ll be making can be found in various traditions around the planet. The Huichol people who live in Central America are famous for their vibrant string and bead art and call their version Tzicuri. They are specifically for children and now widely made by children all over North America.
Tibetan people use very similar techniques to make their Namkha. They use different colours to represent elements of the cosmos.
In these sessions you’ll learn the technique used by both cultures, then use wood, wool and raffia to make your own beautiful and colourful endless knot decorations.
We’ll be making larger decorations to put up around ELL and smaller ones for you to take home.

Taking a closer look at these brilliant soil makers! Join our mini citizen science project counting worms in our Forest Garden and locations in the park to discover how healthy the soil is – where and why?

We will also be hunting for slithery slugs to take a closer look with our magnifying glasses at these important soil makers and see how many different types we can find.

Summer & Autumn Safari brings together a group of men to explore a variety of different London sites within nature, connecting in mindfulness, and creating art. The group will take  in new environments, destinations, and fresh air, while experiencing unusual places together. We will go at our own pace, while sharing good conversation, hot food, and foraged salad from the site. Each participant receives a notebook with drawing materials to record the journey. The spokes of the Wellbeing Wheel represent mind, body, spirit, friendship, adventure.
